Tournament-ready gear for serious competitors. Everything you need to perform your best when it matters most.
Competition day leaves no room for equipment problems. A failed gear check, forgotten item, or uncomfortable rash guard can derail months of preparation. This guide ensures you're fully equipped for tournament success, from IBJJF compliance to backup contingencies.
Understanding tournament gear requirements is non-negotiable. IBJJF rules mandate that no-gi competitors wear rash guards matching their belt rank color—white for white belts, blue for blue belts, and so on. Black rash guards are permitted for brown and black belts. The rash guard must fit properly without excessive looseness, and shorts must reach at least mid-thigh. These rules apply to most major tournaments, though smaller events may have different requirements.
Your competition gear bag needs redundancy. Pack two complete competition outfits—matching rash guards, shorts, and spats. Equipment can tear during warm-ups, get soaked with sweat before your division is called, or fail inspection for unexpected reasons. Having a complete backup eliminates stress and ensures you'll compete regardless of mishaps. Label your gear clearly with your name.
Beyond clothing, competition day essentials include: athletic tape for fingers and toes, nail clippers (many tournaments check nail length), a small towel, water bottle, easily digestible snacks, your tournament registration confirmation, valid ID, and any required medical documentation. Create a checklist and verify everything the night before.
Preparation extends to knowing your gear intimately. Train in your exact competition outfit at least 2-3 sessions before the tournament. Verify the fit feels comfortable through full ranges of motion. Ensure nothing shifts during intense scrambles. Competition is not the time to discover your new rash guard rides up or your shorts restrict your mobility. Your gear should be invisible—so familiar you don't think about it while performing.
